Sarah - Illustrator/Senior Graphic Designer

It's time once again for us to shine a bright spotlight onto some of the excellent talent we have on the books here at Artisan Recruitment - and this week we're thrilled to be joined by Sarah, a Melbourne-based Illustrator and Senior Graphic Designer! She was kind enough to sit down with us and have a chat about her career, her work processes, and a whole lot more... Enjoy!

Tell us a little bit about your background:
I have been a freelance commercial Illustrator and Senior Graphic Designer since 2002 with an extensive client base. When I am not creating packaging or illustrating for clients, I am working on my illustration business called Popcorn Blue, in which I produce children and adults wall decor, greeting cards and screen printed textiles sold by stockists Australia wide. Finally (and most excitedly!) I am a children’s illustrator with 7 children’s books published to date.

My illustration process in primarily by hand, with some digital illustration incorporated. I have a very detailed style and have been described as whimsical and quirky. I believe my work is unique and stands out from the crowd. My all time favourite work is packaging where I get to incorporate illustration and graphic design, so fun!

What sparked your interest in illustration?
I have always loved to draw, been inspired by everything I see around me from nature, street art, children’s books, homewares, interior design, art and more. Illustration is a fast growing trend appearing on so many different formats. It is really exiting to not only witness the renaissance of illustration but to be a part of it.

How do you think creativity is changing the world around us?
Design is at the forefront of everything - to stand out in the crowd our creativity is the key. Creativity permeates through all types business; eye catching, snazzy, beautiful, shocking, to be noticed. Creativity really pushes the boundaries of our imagination.

What's your preferred social media site, and why?

Instagram is my preferred social media platform as my brand is visual, photographs show in a snap shot who I am and what my story is. I do not need words. It’s a powerful platform and my followers increase every day.

What is a typical day for you?
A cup of coffee over Instagram starts my day as I scroll through other artists and designers noticing trends. I also like to post early in the morning something I am working on as traffic is good.

I then move on to working on a current project whether it is a commercial design or illustrating job for a agency or publisher, illustrating for my business Popcorn Blue, putting orders together for stockists or planning new products that I wish to launch. I am always busy and I love it.

How does living and working in Melbourne influence your work?
Melbourne IS in my humble opinion the leading edge design capital of Australia. It is extremely competitive, especially with design markets and Melbourne stockists, and because of this I am continually pushed to work harder, put myself out there and be the best version of myself I can be in this industry.

What is your favourite design or work of yours and why?
My favourite work...  Oooo I have so many... In terms of my own illustration business, my animal portrait series the favourites been the Otter and Raccoon. These guys make everyone feel good, I enjoyed creating them and they have been very successful images in my greeting card range.

Do you have any advice for people who want to follow in your career footsteps?
Work hard. Don’t worry about what others are doing, but instead listen to your own self and follow your own ideas and that is where the magic happens.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

The best advice I have been given is to put myself out there in as many ways as possible and something with bite.
